Sometime in the summer 2000 Flavors played live on Radio One, as part of a 'Battle of the Bedroom Bands' presented by Dave Pearce. Here is the full story of that day...

  Mid Morning: The word on the streets of Aldwick is that Radio One are planning a 'Battle of the bands' for that very evening. The winner gets to play their own song live on radio one. The catch is, to win the competition the band must play 30 seconds of Robbie William's 'Let Me Entertain You'.

Just happening to know that song, and have a practice that evening, Flavors send off an email and await a reply.

1pm : Steve recieves a call from a Radio One executive (or possibly the tea boy) who listens down the phone to a prior recording of said Williams 'classic'. "That was great" he says, "I had all my friends around the phone listening". The signs are good.

5pm : Another call, this time from a more senior Radio One worker, who wants to hear our recording again. Steve plays her all 4 minutes. "I only wanted to hear a bit" is her reply. "I was screaming down the phone for you to stop". Nethertheless, she confirms that Flavors will appear in the competition.

7pm : "You sound stoned" says the researcher to Nick, as he investigates the bunch of reprobates he is about to let loose on the airwaves. Meanwhile Flavors are set up in their regular practice space. At this point it transpires that the competition is billed as a battle of the 'bedroom' bands. Nick decides not to mention that we are in the Pagham Yacht Club with all our gear. Also, after some consideration, Flavors decide not to use Andy's alternative lyrics - "Let's all kill Robbie Williams".

8pm : The band are in position as Dave Pearce himself calls the Flavors designated mobile. First there is some light chat with Nick;
"Tell us about your worst gig" Dave asks
"Well, the venue phoned, and said they had a band that had cancelled" blags Nick, "and we turned up and didn't have a clue what we were doing"
"HAHAHAH" Laughs Dave, out of pity.

Nick introduces the band, Andy Phipps (quick drum fill) James Bartley (quick bit of lead, we're on the radio for fecks sake, let's enjoy it) Sam and Steve Galloway...
Dave: "Are they related?"
Nick: "Yes they're brothers."

Then our time arrives. "From Bognor Regis, it's Flavors" yells Dave. The phone is handed to an unpaid assistant who retreats to the back of the club. Flavors rattle through a shortened 'Let Me Entertain You' and adjourn to the Galloway brother's car to listen to the results of the phone vote...

And they came second. The winners were a band with a girl singer, from Winchester or something.

Later on : Flavors listen to a recording of their performance, and realise that a full band, top volume thrash into a mobile phone was probably not the best idea for radio. In fact, the overall sound was comparable to Robbie Williams. Albeit Robbie Willaims drowning in a dinghy with a plugged in strat. But at least there was some praise from Dave, who "liked Andy on the drums".

Dave Pearce - "Wear the hat, it makes you look ill"
